In a bid promote the culture of reading and improve the standards of library education in the country’s tertiary institutions, the Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (TANGO) in partnership with Book Aid International recently donated 80 books to the University of The Gambia (UTG) and the Management Development Institution (MDI).

The presentation held at the TANGO conference hall in Kanifing, is the latest donation aimed at promoting the culture of reading to help promote library education at the beneficiary institutions.

Presenting the items, Ndey Sireng Bakurin, executive director of TANGO, while underscoring the importance of reading, acknowledged that the importance of books in society can never be over emphasised despite the advances in technology.

“Books are the treasure trove of knowledge and wisdom that enlighten the mind, soothe the soul and enrich life. Thus, one should pledge to make reading a regular habit and pass on the wealth to the future generations for a better world.”

TANGO ED further reiterated that the advances made in digital technology has posed challenges to students, saying when school libraries are stocked with standard books it will encourage more students to read.

She pointed out that TANGO will further extend the donation of books to other schools in rural Gambia, further expressing their resolve to conduct assessment with the beneficiaries to see how useful the books are before another consignment.

Receiving the items on behalf of the University of The Gambia, Alieu Jarju, who in thanking TANGO for the timely gesture, affirmed that learning will never submit itself and the books given will not only benefit the present generation, but also the future generation of students.

“This donation came at the right time because University of The Gambia ensure quality and cannot go anywhere without books.”

He spoke highly of their new library setting at the Faraba Banta Campus, claiming that UTG has the best library in terms of quality standard which can accommodate all sorts of books.

Jarju assured that the books would not only benefit the academic staff but most importantly the students.

Alhagie Sillah-Conateh, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Management Development Institute (MDI), expressed gratitude to the donors, further revealing that MDI has been constrained as far as their library is concerned in terms of digital and physical books.

PRO Conateh further stated that they need more books to meet the wider audience of their students due to different areas of studies, thus any assistance in those areas is laudable.
